Month-by-month planting & maintenance

A North Texas guide to what your lawn, beds and trees need each month. Bring questions to the nursery β€” our Texas Certified Nursery Professionals are glad to help.

1January

  • Plant trees now β€” fall and winter are the best time. Use Root Stimulator and Soil Conditioner when planting.
  • Prune trees and apply pruning sealer to large cuts.
  • Keep watering through winter β€” it protects plants from freeze damage.

2February

  • Apply pre-emergent weed control (Amaze granules) to stop spring weeds before they sprout.
  • Spray existing weeds.
  • Get a soil test so you know what your beds need.
  • Still a great month to plant trees. Feed trees and shrubs and keep watering.

3March

  • Repeat the pre-emergent program and spray weeds that got through.
  • Soil test if you haven't yet.
  • Plant trees and feed trees and shrubs. Keep up with watering.

4April

  • Arbor Day is the last Friday in April β€” plant a tree!
  • Check soil temperature before seeding Bermuda (68Β°F minimum).
  • Apply grub control.
  • Sod availability picks up. Spray for pine tip moths. Bedding plants are arriving!

5May

  • Use a systemic fungicide on roses and susceptible plants.
  • Fertilize bedding plants and your lawn.
  • Remove standing water to keep mosquitoes down.
  • Spray for bag worms. Control weeds and plant spring bulbs.

6June

  • Second pre-emergent application.
  • Top-dress beds with compost or mulch.
  • Add Bloom Start to crepe myrtles to extend bloom time.
  • Spray weeds.

7July

  • Use Bloom Set on tomatoes.
  • Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizer on fescue in the heat.
  • Give trees and shrubs extra water and care.
  • Plant summer color.

8August

  • Yellowing turf usually means iron deficiency or fungus β€” bring us a sample and we'll help diagnose it.
  • Watch trees and shrubs closely for insects.

9September

  • Third pre-emergent application.
  • Plant fescue seed.
  • Prepare beds for pansies.
  • Plant mums for fall color.

10October

  • Pick out spring bulbs while selection is best.
  • Plant winter color β€” pansies, violas, kale and cabbage.
  • Use Root Stimulator when planting trees.
  • Talk to a landscaper now about winter construction projects. And visit the Pumpkin Patch!

11November

  • Apply winterizer fertilizer.
  • Plant spring bulbs between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
  • Poinsettias and live Christmas trees arrive.
  • Great month to plant trees. Gift certificates make an easy gift.

12December

  • Keep watering trees and lawns through dry spells.
  • Apply dormant oil.
  • Plant trees and prune through March.
  • Fourth pre-emergent application.

Tip: pre-emergent weed control works best on a schedule β€” February, June, September and December. Set a reminder and stop weeds before they start.
